Taking action at a critical climate turning point to seed regenerative futures
Sabah Climate Futures weaves an embodied understanding of the crisis, tending to interconnectedness amongst ecosystems as a key component of resilience as we frame the work through a sense that “the crisis is relational.”
We ground regenerative principles to re-imagine a future of Sabah that’s sovereign and rooted. Climate data projections empower us with insight and knowledge, supporting strategic thinking around climate. Yet, connection with community lives and the more-than-human foregrounds our conversations, seeding action from the core of our being.

Methane and Climate Awareness and Reduction Initiative in Sabah
Sabah, Malaysia’s largest oil producer, faces energy security challenges due to its heavy reliance on natural gas, which constitutes over 86% of its energy mix. In January 2024, Forever Sabah, in collaboration with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), initiated a Methane Awareness, Quantification and Reduction campaign. This initiative aims to address methane emissions in Sabah's oil and gas sector by enhancing stakeholder awareness, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and aligning policy development with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Masterplan (SE-RAMP) 2040 and Malaysia’s Global Methane Pledge.

Sabah Renewable Energy Rural Electrification Roadmap (Sabah RE2)
To address energy poverty in Sabah, non-profit organisations joined forces to develop the Sabah Renewable Energy Rural Electrification (RE2) Roadmap, an action plan for 100% energy access in Sabah, which is home to 72% of Malaysia’s unelectrified rural population. Sabah RE2 aims to electrify 206 villages through renewable energy mini-grids, promoting sustainable livelihoods and enhancing climate resilience. By integrating solar, micro-hydro, and bio-waste solutions, the roadmap emphasizes equity, low-carbon development, and watershed stewardship, fostering transformative partnerships among communities and stakeholders.
